WILLOWMORE

I know of a father and son who were joint judges (Oom Theuns and Willem Botha), but once again history was made when two brothers, namely Sakkie and Vaatjie Nell, judged together. They apparently made a formidable team! Seven emergent farmers, 17 stud breeders and 12 flock farmers showed 572 goats.

Japie Coetzee was the announcer and two Australians, March and Lin, were the ring officials.

Rift Valley Fever
08 September 2011

______________________________________________

Rift Valley fever is a fever-causing viral disease that affects livestock and humans in Africa. It is most common during years of heavy rainfall.

People get Rift Valley fever mainly from the bite of an infected mosquito. The disease can also be spread by contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected animal.
Rift Valley fever can cause serious eye infection, inflammation of the brain, severe bleeding (hemorrhage), and death.

To prevent Rift Valley fever, travelers to Africa should take precautions against insect bites: 1) use insect repellent, 2) wear long sleeves and pants, and 3) use bednets. Travelers should also avoid contact with livestock in areas where outbreaks of Rift Valley fever are occurring.

What is Rift Valley fever?
Rift valley fever is a fever-causing disease that affects livestock (including cattle, buffalo, sheep, and goats) and humans in Africa. It is named after a trough stretching 4,000 miles from Jordan through eastern Africa to Mozambique. Rift Valley fever is spread mainly by infected mosquitoes and appears most often during years of heavy rainfall.

Where is Rift Valley fever found?
Rift Valley fever is most common in the livestock-raising regions of eastern and southern Africa. The disease is also found in most countries of sub-Saharan Africa and in Madagascar.

What is the infectious agent that causes Rift Valley fever?
The disease is caused by the Rift Valley fever virus.

How do people get Rift Valley fever?
People can get Rift Valley fever from the bite of mosquitoes and possibly other blood- sucking insects. The virus usually lies dormant in the eggs of Aedes mosquitoes. During heavy rains and floods, the eggs hatch large numbers of infected mosquitoes that feed on livestock and spread the virus. Other species of mosquitoes, and possibly other biting insects, can also become infected and spread the disease. The occurrence of disease in a large number of domestic animals is referred to as an “epizootic.” The presence of a mosquito-borne epizootic can lead to an epidemic in humans. People can get Rift Valley fever if they are exposed to the blood or other body fluids of infected animals. This can happen during the slaughtering or handling of infected animals or during the preparation of food. Laboratory workers have become infected through airborne transmission during work with virus cultures or laboratory samples containing the virus.

What is the treatment for Rift Valley fever?
The drug ribavirin is being studied for its effectiveness against Rift Valley fever

ANNUAL WINTER CROPS

Annual winter crops can be divided into two categories. Those yielding early pasture (up to and including September) and those that yield late pasture (up to and including December). The last date for planting is the end of May.

The following pastures work well:
  Rye grass mixed with clover.
Rye grass = 10 kg/ha Dargle plus 5 kg/ha Agrihilton plus 10 kg/ha Enhancer or Agriton of Energyl
Clover = 10 kg/ha Persian clover or ‘assegaai’ clover
Stool rye mixed with rye grass and clover
  Stool rye = 20 kg/ha SSR729
Rye grass = 12 kg/ha Enhancer or Agriton or Energyl
Clover = 10 kg/ha Persian clover or ‘assegaai’ clover.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR LAMB IS SICK

When you spend a few minutes at feeding time observing your lamb, be sure to observe his manure and watch to see how he urinates and how long it takes him. Watch his breathing and be familiar with the ease and rate that he normally breathes when it is cold outside and when it is hot. Watch how he moves and how he holds his ears and head. If you are familiar with his normal behavior, it will be quite evident when something is wrong. If he “doesn’t act right,” evaluate what it is that isn’t right. The following are descriptions of things that could be wrong and what to do in each case.

First, however, there are a few things you need to know about one of the common treatments, antibiotics:

Antibiotics are drugs which are used to treat bacterial diseases. They are not effective against viral diseases or diseases caused by feeding accidents. However, we often use them to prevent bacteria from causing even more problems when the disease is not caused by bacteria.
Antibiotics have withdrawal times. The withdrawal time is the time that must pass after a drug has been given until the animal can be slaughtered for food. Since your market lambs are going to be slaughter after the 4-H market sale, it is extremely important to check the withdrawal time for any drug you plan to give to your lamb. If you give it a drug such as a long-acting tetracycline. For instance LA 200, one week before the fair, you can not sell your lamb at the fair since the withdrawal time is 28 days. Read the label of any medication for withdrawal times.

Dosage is also important. Many of our drugs do not have dosages for sheep. If such is the case, use the dosage for calves or cattle. Every drug has a concentration on the label. For example penicillin may have a concentration of 200,000 unit per ml (cc). The dosage is 10,000 units (80 x 10,000). So, you need to give 4 cc of penicillin (800,000 divided by 200,000). Do not under or over treat unless instructed by your veterinarian.
